NOVEMBER 2011. The results of our work at 3 Castle Street, Kendal (to the rear of Wildman Street) have now been published in the Transactions of the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society. Only a small site, but some intriguing findings that potentially reveal a lot about the development of that part of Kendal.

FESTIVAL OF BRITISH ARCHAEOLOGY

Following a well-attended talk at Kendal Museum on the Castle Dairy last Saturday we will be carrying out a small excavation at Swarthmoor Hall from tomorrow (Friday 22nd) to Sunday (24th), also as part of the CBA Festival of British Archaeology. Visitors are welcome throughout, we should be there from about 10am to 5pm, depending on the weather, although Sunday will probably be the best day to come as we will hopefully have something to show by then!

APRIL 2011. Details of events taking place as part of this years CBA Festival of British Archaeology are now available online. Greenlane Archaeology is involved in two events - a talk at Kendal Museum on the Castle Dairy (16th July) and an excavation at Swarthmoor Hall (22nd-24th July). See the CBA website for more details.

The results of our 2007 excavation in Barrow-in-Furness are now published: 'The Barrow Steam Corn Mill, 1870-1972', Transactions of the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society. This is, as far as we are aware, the only example where the entire footprint of a late 19th century steam corn mill has been excavated, its dockside location allowing the processing of vast quantities of imported grain, although its earliest incarnation had a drying kiln that was apparently largely processing oats. The report also includes a basic chronology of bricks produced locally by William Gradwell, the 'builder of Barrow'.

PLENTY OF NEW REPORTS ON OASIS

A large number of new reports for Cumbria have been added to the OASIS website. This has nearly doubled the number we have on there, to 76, including several from 2006 and 2007.
